Understanding the creation of value - Humber VHB's pot basil (Case Study)

Using the lessons from this VCA project, Humber VHB now know that 'keeping the customer satisfied' is not just about monitoring customer complaints.  They also need to understand what creates value for their customers and align their performance to deliver an agreed approach  Humber VHB are determined to implement a lean approach across their business.

A number of specific improvement projects were identified and cross-checked to company KPIs to ensure they would deliver the required performance:

  • Improve the flow through the greenhouse to make better use of space and reduce quality handling damage
  • Re-design the packaging and despatch area and introduce a pull. process to customer ordering
  • Reduce demand variability by working more closely with retail customers
  • Investigate and reduce plant growth variability
  • Streamline information flows and create centralised planning
  • Assign a team dedicated to continuous improvement to both improve overall quality and help with implementation of future state projects
  • Roll-out 'lean' awareness programme to all employees
